I’m a copyeditor, proofreader, writer, researcher, and lecturer. My life has long centred on books and the written word. In my blog posts, I discuss a variety of topics from the novels I read for fun to my research to offering tips to support writers; you’ll find more details here.
My academic work focuses on Victorian literature and culture. Most recently my focus has been on representations of medicine and reactions in the Victorian popular press to advances such as anaesthesia and germ theory. See my publications page for details.
I have been helping writers improve their writing in the classroom (University of California at Davis, University of Portsmouth, and Canterbury Christ Church University) and out for almost twenty years. Alongside my teaching, I have worked as a freelance proofreader and copyeditor since 2003. My clients have included a retired doctor who was writing a biography of a Czech composer, dozens of postgraduate students in fields as diverse as medicine, business, and Saudi literature, and with established academics on drafts of articles in art history and literature.
I have recently established The Writer’s Agency so I can focus on helping a wider variety of writers find their voice, or their agency as writers. If you think we could work well together, please do get in touch so we can discuss how I can help you. In the meantime, enjoy my blog posts and the free resources I’m developing for writers of all types.
